Sound Memory

With the rapid development of China urbanization, many old city communities with unique cultural characteristics have faded away. This project aims to take advantage of modern social media to maintain and revive the tradition of the street's characteristics in Hutongs, Beijing. Hutongs give an insight into ordinary Beijingers’ living environment and serve as a stage for development in history and culture. I interviewed four residents groups about their memories of old hutong lives and restored the recollection in the virtual world through Augmented Reality technology. From their interview, they all have mentioned the special Beijing Hawking, and thus, I applied the AR technology to reproduce and visualize the properties of Old Beijing Hutong in a virtual environment, representing its unparalleled cultural features:  a glimpse of old hutong living and a narrative game-like experience.
